Our Vision
We recognize how complex the local system of resources can be. WellMind Connection makes it easy for community members to connect with the services they need to support mental wellbeing. We are here to be your partner- to remove the barriers to getting you the right services at the right time. Our vision is a community where well-being is achievable for all.
Our Mission
Connecting with behavioral health care can feel confusing. We want the process to be easy, straightforward, and create trust with you. Our behavioral health system serves different community members differently. This impacts lower-income, rural, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities the most, and creates mistrust around behavioral health or substance use treatment. The barriers experienced by every individual is unique; we commit to learning your unique story to serve your unique needs.
Our History
Our community members have asked for a less complicated way to find behavioral health services. Several community reports outlined barriers people often experience trying to connect with these resources. In 2019, Boulder County started to work with partners to create an easy way for individuals to connect with care that supports their mental wellbeing. WellMind Connection provides one place for all community members to link with the services they need.
WellMind Connection started providing navigation services in April of 2023, by supporting Boulder County staff to find mental health resources for their clients.
In November 2023, WellMind Connection started offering our services to the public. In the first three months, the WellMind team worked with 140 individuals. WellMind team members helped to connect these individuals to 300 different behavioral health services.
Our Approach
WellMind Connection can be reached by email, phone, and website. If you or your loved one needs mental health resources, we want to help. We design our service around you; focusing on the type of care or resources that will add to you want. We are here to connect you with services that fit you on a cultural, physical, and emotional level. You can work with our team for free, in English or Spanish (more language help on request).
Our community also expressed a desire for more response to immediate behavioral health needs; One that does not involve police involvement. WellMind is partnered with crisis team members who provide more support in the moment. This mobile crisis team supports you when facing a mental health crisis, a tough emotional situation, or when you need a little extra support. We are here to help you get through challenging moments and figure out the next steps together.
Behavioral Health in Boulder County
In 2020, Boulder County and its partners explored the challenges in our behavioral health system. We wanted to understand why some services are lacking or hard to access. In two years, over 700 community members, service agencies and partners were interviewed. In 2022, the County’s leadership released a report, summarizing these findings. This report, titled the Behavioral Health Roadmap, defined ways to improve access to mental health services in Boulder County.
The pandemic only made it harder for community members to receive behavioral health care in Boulder County. These new challenges mostly affected our lower-income, rural, and BIPOC communities. To repair this damage to the community, the County used American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to open more behavioral health programs. WellMind Connection and our Crisis Assistance and Treatment team, are two of these programs. We work as one team, to help link you with services for your wellbeing, and support you in person when you need it most.
Success Stories
I had the opportunity to help a client who called requesting behavioral health services for his two sons, one a teenager and the other an adult. He felt a little overwhelmed by the situation and didn’t know how to ask for a therapist or how to start seeking resources. I asked more questions and gathered details, which made the client feel safer about sharing the help he was looking for. I immediately contacted an organization that had space available to see patients right away with a bilingual therapist in Boulder. The organization called the client directly, and they are now working together to arrange future appointments. Furthermore, I was able to send him an email with a list of other options for behavioral health psychiatrists and therapists. The client also requested assistance with Medicaid for one of his sons, so I created a referral, and someone called him to help with the application. I called the client back, and he was very thankful for the resources and excited to start behavioral health treatment for his two sons.
I received a referral for a Spanish speaking mother, who has been struggling with how to find the support she needs for her son. Her child, elementary school age, has been having challenges with emotional regulation, making it hard for him to do well in school. The mother was overwhelmed because she has been having trouble finding a Spanish speaking therapist that will work with that age group. After getting some more information and building on past successes, we both made a good plan to move forward. I supported by calling several therapists that would meet the needs of the client, including someone that speaks Spanish and takes her insurance. Through herself advocacy, communication, and our work together, the client and I were able to find a good fit for her son, while also providing additional support (i.e emotional support and a list of questions to ask the therapist during a consultation). During this experience, the client mentioned feeling supported and heard.
Wellmind Connection worked with a young family who was a referral from the CoResponder team. They were staying in a hotel and only had a week to find new housing before their hotel stay expired. They were recently evicted from their home and had to find a new place to live. They had a 5 year old, 1 year old, and a third baby expected in a month. The navigator helped them search for affordable rentals in the area, as well as get them information for WIC, SNAP, and LEAP to lower their monthly out-of-pocket costs. They were able to secure housing and apply for these programs in time for their new child.
A single immigrant mother who is struggling with employment and housing reached out to the Wellmind Team to learn more about what type of support is available. This person was able to meet with a bilingual navigator and together, were able to brainstorm different options that fit the person’s needs. The navigator supported in connecting the client with an immigrant lawyer, a housing advocate at SPAN for financial assistance, and financial assistance through EFAA that would support her in getting her car fixed, which also affected her ability to work. She received rental assistance from a local agency while she gets her car fixed and was also able to connect with a case worker at SPAN.
As a WellMind Connection Navigator, I had the privilege of helping a new undocumented monolingual family navigate the complexities of accessing resources. I’ve been walking hand in hand with them to guide them through their application processes, provide bus information to get to their appointments, and even provided pictures of the building they have to go to. We have created a very special bond; this family calls me every time they are going to a government building and hangs up once they are being helped by someone else. Witnessing their trust, courage, and bravery reaffirms my belief in the power of community support and compassion.
